Espresso vs Filter: Choosing Your Daily Brew

· 5 min read
The biggest misconception about espresso versus filter coffee is that one is "stronger" than the other. They're not more or less strong — they're extracting different things. Espresso forces hot water through finely-ground coffee under pressure in under 30 seconds, producing a concentrated shot with a layer of crema. It rewards darker roasts with bold, low-acid profiles — which is why our Europa Espresso Blend is roasted specifically for this method. Filter methods — pour-over, French press, South Indian filter — extract more slowly, over minutes rather than seconds, at normal pressure. This tends to highlight acidity, sweetness and origin character more clearly, which is why lighter roasts like our Chikmagalur Estate Arabica shine here. Neither is more "authentic." If you want a quick, bold, milk-friendly cup, go espresso. If you want to taste the nuance of a specific origin, go filter. We roast and grind for both — the honest answer is to keep both in your cupboard.
